Fishing with a rod and reel is nearly as much fun as hunting them with a Rock Hammer. Neat fossils, we find a few in the river here.

Thanks Rob! :)

I have - bruising is now just a bit yellow, and the cut has healed nicely, but will probably leave a bit of a scar.

You really made an interesting find, Tim. Congratulations. I hope you can get a real expert's opinon one of these days. I'm sure that your fossil is showing fin supports of some sort, and that's exciting. I've been doing a little internet research to see what I could find, but I haven't come to any conclusions. Do you have the paper on the morphology of Semionotus from the Newark Supergroup by Olsen and McCune? Parts of your fossil look like the proximal radials in their diagrams, but I haven't looked closely enough, and I'm just learning as I go. Great find, and I'm glad you're healing.

Mike

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

Thanks Mike! I do have that PDF. I see what you're saying. :)

I may have to see if I can send an e-mail to Olsen or Mccune, and see what they say.

Thanks for the info!

  • 2 months later...

An interesting update (I thought) to my interesting find:

Two months after finding these, I found the other half of the fossil which shows the "radials", or pterygiophores. (fin attachment bones.)

And, oddly enough, this one does NOT show the bones,... which indicates to me that the explosion of decompositional gasses was only on one side of the fish, (it's left side).

I love when I can find different parts of the same fossil at different times. :)

Very nice detail, I would probably still be looking for the other half of that fish. :D

Congratulations, Tim. That's fascinating. Thanks for the update.

Thanks Steve. Nothing quite like a fossil that tells a story.
