Swamp_Thing
Weather was a beautiful 64 yesterday in Greenville so I took the poor man's dip (shorts and sandals) for a day in the creek. Fossils were not willing to relinquish their hiding places. I have to say I dug more holes than I've ever dug before though nothing to write home about. Some days you eat the bar and other days the bar eats you.
sixgill pete
It sure was a nice day yesterday, and today. To bad you didn't find anything to brag about, but as you said GMR does not always give up it's goodies. I am surprised though that the water wasnt to cold for shorts, even with all the nice weather. It wasn't that warm several weeks ago when I had a pair of leaky waders on. I will caution you to be careful in there with sandals, I am sure you are aware of all of the broken glass in there and the rusted metal; and I have personally come across more than one syringe. RickNC
You went into GMR with sandals?! In the warm months I go in there with an old pair of boots or more recently with kayak shoes. I've come across several old, rusting appliances, rusted metal signs, and other assorted items in there. I'd never go in there with anything less than that due to the garbage. Swamp_Thing
Sounds like I'll be easy to pick out if you ever run into me there. Been doing it for years and the cold doesn't bother me much.

Cold really isn't why I was surprised. It's the trash. I've across many hunks of all appliances, mangled shopping carts, rusted metal signs, etc. I've been caught on the shin more than once by such items. Luckily my footwear was high enough to have prevented any injury. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
cowsharks
Even on the hottest of days, I always wear waders. In the heat I wear my breathable waders that are super thin. They can get a little warm, but I feel "safer" from all the junk in that water. It's one thing to be dipping my hands and arms in it, but to be standing in it for several hours gives me the creeps for some reason. Daryl. sixgill pete
in the summer i use hip boots and waders in the winter, knowing everything that drains in there, it being the storm drain for Greenville, i feel better. Gas, oil, lawn chemicals just to start with. and using waders, I can go when it is cold when no one else is there. RickNC
Waders in winter but just old boots or kayak shoes in warm weather. Gets entirely too hot the way I sling gravel.

I always wondered if you would dig up some kind of prehistoric fungus that eats flesh or something. The Peace and the Suwannee are low and I know that cattle ranches and farms are all along those rivers. I have always used shorts and mesh beach shoes (the Wally World variety). I wouldn't mind barefooting, but the shovel tends to bite back. I find it embarrassing to do the gravel hop in knee deep water......my screeching disturbs the local wildlife. As I mentioned in one of my other posts, I can't afford fancy waders and wetsuits, so if the water's cold, I just wade on in, stand there and suffer until the legs go numb and the problem's solved. Haven't lost any toes yet! A good day hunting is, well..... a GOOD DAY.
Swamp_Thing
^^^^^^same here^^^^^ I really don't mind the cold or the trash, the air you breathe everyday is far worse then what you will find in that river. Although a prehistoric fungus would be an interesting find for my "personal" collection.
Tarheel59
Well not sure how deep into the creek you guys get but I have seen Mike and Rick about chest deep in there. A little different if only getting in there up to your knees versus chest deep...Jeff/Tarheel My waders have me spoiled too. I even go so far as to wear them into the early summer months I just let the straps hang down... That and I have cloth upolstery in truck so I perfer not sitting in there in wet shorts... sixgill pete
Some of my best finds have come from chest deep areas. MikeDOTB
Sometimes GMR can be stingy. One day you can walk out with a half dozen nice finds, and the next day manage half a dozen broken sand tigers! DO, or do not. There is no try.
