Trilobite Preparation

Hello everyone

I invested in an airscribe, swamblaster etc last year and really enjoying prepping. I'm lucky to have a few local deposits where I can find some good material. Thought it would be great to talk with others who are prepping their own stuff, share tips, pictures etc. I've attched a few pics of one I prepped recently - took about 3 hours for this one - turned out almost perfect except whe I was working through the matrix with my aero, put one small hole in the right free cheek. Will need to figure out how to repair. ANyway, here is my start to finish process on a big cernuolimbus.

Thanks for the series of pictures!

What trilobite is it?

Excellent prep on this Cernuolimbus. There are many McKay trilobites that need to be described. This looks different than a few others I've seen elsewhere... truncated in length, or is the cephalon telescoped slightly?

And how did you know it was in there?

I second that...and boy, would I like an airscribe, but I'd have to move off the kitchen table!

Well done, and thanks for posting! :)

Unusual bug - have not seen one before.

It is a cernuolimbus species. We are finding a number of possible new species recently, and these will hopefully be verified soon through a new paper on the McKay group trilobites.

I actually split this rock revealing both sides, which I then glued back together, then prepped down from the top. There is actually a ghostly image of the trilo that you can see on the first unprepped pic.

I have found 4-5 of these now and they are sometimes more circular like this one, or sometimes more elongated. It has a couple neat features - the first is at the top of the cephalon, there is a triangular protuberance which you can't really see in the photos, but it is the feature that earned it the nick name the snow-plough (like the attachments that used to go on the trains passing through the snowy mountain passes). Secondly, along the anterior border furrow are very distinct indentations, and thirdly, in most the ones i have, at the tips of the genal spines, the tips bend a bit. You can see the bended tips above but not the other features - I'll have to take some close ups and post.

Verrry interesting... was going to say, you dont see things like this every day, but that makes sense if they are new! I saw your other post to the trilo collection page, and had to comment. Nice prep job(s), that machine works wonders!
