John Hamilton
I think I have found my first cookie cutter tooth and a basking shark gill raker. If I am correct these will be my first of each one from the Lee Creek spoils. Thanks for looking! And as always if I am incorrect please feel free to set me straight. Auspex
I don't know my gill rakers, but that sure does look like a cookie-cutter tooth to me; congratulations! sixgill pete
John, I have to agree with your ID's. I am still looking for my first cookie cutter. Congrats on that rare find. I have a couple of gill raker's,none as complete and nice as yours; but even more prized to me is my basking shark tooth from Lee Creek, another rare micro tooth. John Hamilton
I never been to Lee Creek and you have some great finds. Thanks! You definitely need to make a trip to Aurora then. The spoils piles are great fun and the museum and staff are wonderful. Edited March 1, 2012 by John Hamilton
sixgill pete
John, with the wear on that tooth, it would be hard to say yes and be positive. It does show some of the same characteristics, so I would say it is a possibility. sixgill pete
I never been to Lee Creek and you have some great finds. The material that John, myself and others search for micros is available at the Aurora Fossil Museum. The Lee Creek Mine, owned by PCS phosphates in Aurora, has been closed to collecting unfortunately for the last few years. mako-mama
Very nice finds-and yes, you have a gill raker and an Isistius tooth. Those rather fragile fossils usually get destroyed in the long trip to the Mill-count your blessings! Congrats. Cant speak for that other tooth-sometimes there's just not enough to make a definitive ID.
John Hamilton
Thanks! I guess 2 out of 3 isn't so bad.
siteseer
If you can give us more than one other angle and a little more in focus, someone on the forum might be able to more definite. It is in the lower part of the size range for a basking shark. From the given angle, the root seems too thick but it is a possibility because there is a lot of variation in Cetorhinus teeth. Thanks Don. Any chance that what I have is a basking shark tooth also?
RickNC
Wow. I've been looking for two years for a cc shark tooth.
Govinn
Congrats on the great finds! I would like to add that is seems that the batch of material brought in for the fossil festival has not produced as many larger and as many teeth than the normal spoils pile material, HOWEVER, it has produced a few cookie cutter teeth. This would be the 3rd one that I heard of (that is IF you got your material from the same batch). I went up there shortly after the festival just to make sure that I got a couple of 5 gallon buckets full of material just incase this was a "special" batch of spoils pile material... History will be kind to me for I intend to write it. ~Sir Winston Churchill
Lloyd
Very nice finds. I guess I really need to make it by Aurora my next trip to NC. I think I've read you can take buckets of matrix from the pile at the museum, is that correct?

sixgill pete
I have a couple buckets of the newest stuff, haven't checked it out yet. I also have about 5 buckets left of the last stuff, 4 or 5 of the stuff before that and a pile in the back corner of my yard from material about 3 years ago. I go through as much as I can and let the kids go at the rest.
