Exposing Some Relatives To Fossil Hunting.

Hello all!

I was away this past weekend in upstate NY, for the annual family reunion we attend.

On Sunday, one of my cousins asked if I would teach her, her husband, and her 3 little ones (7, 4, and 2) how to fossil hunt in a creek close to where they live, in the greater Buffalo area.

I was more than happy to oblige. ;)

We set of on Monday, July 2nd around 11:00 am. from the family's cottage on Rushford Lake. We made it to the creek about an hour or so later, after briefly visiting the Past and Present Store and Museum. If you are in Blasdell NY, I highly recommend a visit to the shop. I purchased a new loupe for myself, but they had many fossil and mineral specimens for sale, many very reasonably priced. They also have a small display in the back of many different types of fossils. Awesome store! :D

We got to the nearby creek within minutes of leaving the store, and put in.

The water was warm, (less than refreshing, but easily waded) and I did some explaining of the techniques I use, and what I look for when hunting in this creek. I had hunted here previously with my good buddy Carmine (xonenine) and a few times with my immediate family as well, so I am a veteran of the venue.

I spent a good amount of time identifying some fossils for the relatives, and oohing and ahhing over the little ones' finds. :)

One odd thing we encountered, however, was the presence of leeches! I had never encountered these critters at this locality before, but they were on darn near every rock I picked up out of the water. (At one point in the hunt, one of the little ones screamed for me to take the "snake " off of his arm. It was a fat little 2 inch long leech, that had stretched to about 4.5 inches... not quite a snake, but I didn't blame him for his reaction.! )

Anyway we ended up in the creek, and the kids hunted for about 15 minutes, then spent the rest of the better part of an hour playing in the water. They were very happy.

Their mom and dad looked a bit more seriously for fossils, and came up with a few nice Mucrospirifer brachiopods.

I found a few keepers right off,... thought that they were gastropods,... but they were better than expected - for to my surprise, when cleaned up at the cottage in Rushford, they ended up being what I believe to be two Tornoceras goniatites!!

These were followed by a few shiny brachiopods,... I have yet to ID these...

***** EDIT: They are Pholidostrophia nacrea.*****

Then, a nice, tiny Greenops trilobite pygidium.

Then a few loaded pieces that I knew would clean up nicely, and provide me with some nice ostracods, and tentalculites, as well as some trilo-bits, and brachs.

Another shot of a hash plate...

post-2806-0-14039200-1341627584_thumb.jp

The cousins got tired, and went to clean up at their house about 10 minutes away. I was left behind to my own devices, for another hour and a half of collecting. I had found a productive shelf of shale, and was removing blocks and splitting them as quickly as I could.

I was rewarded for my efforts with a few complete trilos,... in fairly quick succession.

#1 This one broke, but was easily repaired. Eldredgeops.

post-2806-0-76570900-1341627614_thumb.jp

#2 A decent Eldredgeops

post-2806-0-19246400-1341627667_thumb.jp

#3 Another Eldredgeops, but, the left hand side is crushed underneath.

post-2806-0-15651800-1341627690_thumb.jp post-2806-0-48382900-1341627759_thumb.jp

#4 Multiple plate, but not quite complete, and the larger of the two may be a composite of a few different molts, but it sure looks cool.

post-2806-0-06052400-1341627714_thumb.jp

I also found some cephalopods, and a few other small things, that I did not photograph.

A call on the cell from my cousin let me know they were 10 minutes out, and so with great sadness I trudged through the warm water to the pickup point. I was sweaty and dirty, and dying for a drink of water from my bag that I had left in their mini van!

An hour later, I ran to the dock on the lake, and jumped in for a cool refreshing swim!

The next day I divided the fossils up between my cousin and her kids, and we may have set the hook for a trip when we get together again next year!

Not a bad haul for a bout a 2.5 hour trip.

Thanks for looking!

Regards,

Nice haul :envy: The goniatites look like they are pyritized? Very nice trilobites.

Immediate thought: That's Tim!!! A lot of so interesting things in one post... as a visit to an excellent museum providing the relative infos, nice hunting adventure, wonderful finds (agreed with Carmine on that triple bug), - extra for this time - lessons to new fossillers and so on... And all these so pleasantly exposed...

I'd like to be among your studens, my friend, and I believe that If you were a teacher a lot of children would be privileged!!! :)

Thanks Herb! They are pyritized, very similar to what I have seen come out of Hungry Hollow to the Northwest of where I was!

Carmine

Thanks Carmine!

I'm not sure if the multiplate is a complete one that was large, or a composite of a few different specimens.

Loved Past and Present! You were absolutely right about that!

Regards.

Great trip...I hope their expectations for every trip weren't set by this one!

Thank you, Dan. It very may well be - the place is LOADED with fossils! If I could spend a week or two there... (sigh!)

Astrinos, - thank you my friend.

Would that you and I could discuss fossils and hunt together in person. :)

Your kind comments are very much appreciated. -_-

I was hopeful that this would stick in their minds, if not their hearts, and they might think fondly on the afternoon sometime in the future.

It's nice to have relatives, especially kids, interested in going on collecting trips.

It's really nice when you find good stuff on those trips. :)

Missourian, ... I completely agree! So much better when you can find things, and get them hooked early!

Hopefully, they will want to go again
