Roadrunner
For a split second I thought that you were referring to me and their request that I find mammoth bones. ....I'm such an amateur it aptly applies to me for the rest of my life. I'm just lucky that I have such an interesting State in which to wander. And - I can only hope to start to become as knowledgeable as you.
Roadrunner
Well done! Thank you, Auspex. Though I think everyone involved with this did as much work as I. Edited July 22, 2013 by Roadrunner
Auspex
You saw it through, doggedly and with great determination. Getting a pro to come look at it is a real accomplishment! Herb
Thanks, it was a great thread, a lot of fun. I'm still only a somewhat talented amateur, I still learn something every time I log on the FF. Roadrunner
It's only fun as long as there is more to learn. You're right! I not only got the ID, but learned which layer to keep my eyes on as I wander through those cut arroyos. When I wrote the Doc to thank him he said, "Love your dogs! Teach them to find fossils." . Herb
Maybe you should get "lapidary" retrievers! Roadrunner
Edited for accuracy. OK folks - Teres called it first, then Herb! I got a visit from these 2 fine gentlemen this morning from the Natural History Museum. They were on their way to another worksite in the area. Herb, I wish that I'd thought to ask what you addressed above. It is a stromatoporoid. The Dr. did say that it is unusual in our area, and is so silicified that if opened up it would contain layer upon layer. So that might somewhat address your observation. And had it been in it's original material it would have been worthy of collecting. But since it is in deitrus and likely came from far up the mountain at some point - apparently little can be learned from it. So - we finally have an answer. Thank you for your patience, everyone! Now, I've been charged with looking for mammoth bones in the area. I think they just want me busy and quiet for a while. Roadrunner
I edited this, not realizing it would make it pop up to the first page. Sorry especially to those of you who have read it already. Mods - anyway to "UN-hot" it? Edited June 1, 2014 by Roadrunner

quietfocus
Well, I had not read the thread before and just spent the last half hour on the edge of my seat! Very interesting and fun thread. Glad it had a happy ending with a positive ID. -Clayton "We are like butterflies who flutter for a day and think it is forever" - Carl Segan
Missourian
When I recently read about 'Godzillus' found in the Ordovician at Cincinnati, the strangely corrugated fossil/structure featured in this thread came to mind....
