Trevor
Hello everyone, my family and friends are going to the outer banks this summer. I was wondering if anyone here knows any fossil hunting sites, for sharks teeth mostly, within an outer reach of an hour away from Kitty Hawk. I found an E-How thing that says you can find them on the beaches, but from what I have heard you can not find them on the outer banks. I personally believe that there are some on the gravel bars of the beaches, but I dont know. Any help would be great! : )
sixgill pete
Fossils are very uncommon on the Outer banks. I have heard of some washing ashore around the Corolla area, but mostly shells from what I understand. Some occasionally wash ashore near the south point on Ocracoke Island but not enough to warrant a trip there for fossiling. The islands further south are where the best beach collecting is. The beaches of Onslow, Pender and New Hanover counties have offshore fossil beds and they wash ashore in many places. But, any where on the beach there is always that possibility. My suggestion to you is that you visit the Aurora Fossil Museum in Aurora NC. They have a great museum and there are spoil piles from the PCS mine that you can search in. Aurora is about 2 hours or so from Kitty Hawk. Trevor
Wow! Only 2 hours. I recently went to Aurora and Greenville and I was hoping I could go again soon. I might now considering it is so close. I will look as hard as I can at the Outer Banks and post my finds if any when the time comes. : )
