Jacksonville Trip, Late Eocene River Bend Form.

I woke up around 7:30 excited to go to a new fossil hunting ground. My friend will joined me and we left the house around 8. We drove on the road for about 2 hours and 15 minutes. When we arrived i had no idea what the heck i was doing. We wondered and search piles of nothing for about 40 minutes, Then we went back to our original spot and met mikeDOTB by complete incindent. He told me what i needed to do and showed me the ropes. I was glad i met him because without him i would not have found 1 tooth. After he showed us we searched the lots for teeth and other fossils. Mom was racking up in the lot beside us so we went there. Mike found a really nice galeocerdo aduncus and sand tiger. I found fish teeh, barrucuda teeth, and then i scored a nice hemipristis curvatus. Then i went to a place where they already built the apartments but had the riverbend dirt fully exposed. i figured the rain that fell on the roof splashed violently on the dirt under it and i seached there. It sure payed off when i pulled out a flawless purple alpois ladens theresher shark tooth, and directly beside it was a nice sand tiger! After awhile we left we saw an empty lot and hunted there. immendly after i left the car i found an angel shark tooth! then a minute later another hemi! we racked up in the lot scoring about 20 teeth each. After we left we went to a killer resturaunt called Aronalds. Then we left and arrived home and looked at our finds!

Great report! You collected some really good teeth, too; the Angel Shark tooth is particularly nice!

So you ate at Arnold's Huh? Awesome place, my wife and I eat there often. You were only about 20 minutes from my house. Looks like you found some nice stuff. The Alopias is a very nice tooth and I too love that Squatina subserrata (Angel Shark). There must also be a Miocene layer present at the quarry this material is coming out of.

Nice finds Zach. Your title states "Late Eocene River Bend Formation" actually the River Bend Formation is strictly Oligocene. If these piles came from Onslow Quarry (aka Richlands Quarry) then the material is Castle Hayne Formation (Eocene) but if you collected other sites in Onlow County it might be Oligocene material. The fish teeth you found are similar to ones I find in Oligocene material.

Al Dente, I believe the material is coming from a mine on Hwy 17 north of J-ville
