New Members MellowCat Posted October 8, 2008 New Members Share Posted October 8, 2008 Trying to figure out what this could be. It seems quite large to be a fossil, looks more like a vertebrae. Hunted the internet extensively with no luck. http://www.flickr.com/photos/steelsinglesp...57607841844561/ Thanks, Scott P.S. Can't seem to load up the pics. Will edit post in a few after I post on my flickr site.

New Members MellowCat Posted October 9, 2008 Author New Members Share Posted October 9, 2008 coral eh? Never seen coral this big before around here. I bet it weights 2lbs or more.
Guest solius symbiosus
^ I've seen some heads of coral that are humongous from the Paleozoic. Hmmm, I missed this one. I don't think that it is Favosites, but a close up of the structure would help. I'm leaning toward a "lacy" bryozoan, but without better pics, it would be hard to know. A Favostella sp. very similar to Favosites. A large "head" of the tabulate Tetradium sp. from Ky.
Archimedes
[size="2^^ Maybe a bryozoan, and better pics are needed, I do have some coral and bryozoan fossils that look quit similar to yours. Some agatized Paleozoic Favosites corals can weigh 15- 20 lbs, the largest ones more, we made book ends out of some and Paleozoic bryozoans can get quit large too, but not as large as corals can. The largest Paleozoic coral specimens I have seen weigh well over 100 pounds. [/size]
Ordovicious
I would guess a part of a large horn coral... Make no bones about it! Hehe...
jkfoam
I don't see any paleozoic coral structure. I need another picture though. I'd like to see another picture of the edge, especially the edge that is facing down in the edge pic that is shown (does that make sense?). JKFoam The Eocene is my favorite
