Anyone have experience preparing fossil fish from the green river formation, namely from KemmererNewcastle, Wyoming.

Yup... lots. What layer is it is? 18 inch or split fish? If you don't know, is the rock yellow and soft, or is the rock more gray and hard?

And in manner of correction, the Kemmerer fish have nothing to do with Newcastle, which is on the other end of the state.

Green River fish are a lot of fun. The prep on the split fish jpc mentions is a lot easier. They can often be prepped with only non-power hand tools. On two occasions I have guided classes of school kids in prepping small ones. So give it a try on a small, inexpensive one. You just might be hooked.

Thanks, jpc, the layer is somewhat soft and is definitely yellow. I do realize that the Kemmerer fish have nothing to do with Newcastle. I drove from Kemmerer to Newcastle for Dino dig and they are definitely at opposite ends of the state. I'm on a I-pad and it seems to want to link them together unless I change it.

Snolly50' thank you as well. I have messed around with some of them just using dental picks from my dentists and it does a decent job but looking for something more professional I guess. I recently purchased an air scribe from Paleo Tools, the Aro, we will, see how, that goes.
