Large Ammonite Cool Or Uncool

Wow! This piece causes me inner conflict! Amazing art and carving, but was the original specimen more 'authentic' and naturally beautiful... anyway, I will stop over analyzing and say kudos to the sculpter. Being an Anatomist and Amateur Palaeo I can safely say that I would love to own this, husband would absolutely not love it lol

There is a lot of imagination on this ammonite! I think that Halloween will be soon !

the most season appropriate fossil Ive ever seen :) on Halloween they should put it in front of the candy bowl, fill the bowl with sharks teeth, brachiopods, bellemnites and other small fossils and let the trick-or-treaters pick a fossil instead of candy

Dave,

Is this yours or something you've seen somewhere?

Kudos to the artist. He/she is obviously quite imaginative and artistic.

I just don't think I could ever do that to such a nice fossil.

Edit: I just visited the website that is shown in the pic. They've got some fascinating skulls, made out of everything imaginable. I noticed a couple of others made out of ammos and nautilus. Some of them were pretty pricey, too. But it's obviously quite a unique piece of art. Maybe something to add to the Christmas list. :zzzzscratchchin:

Probably not. I've got prepping equipment I'd rather have. Now if I can get the wife to notice this post.

I, too, am indecisive. I think it's cool, but I wouldn't do it if it was mine.

I think you should 'plant' it and let someone find it! :P

It looks cool, but the ammonite was pretty nice to start with.

Context is critical.

My immediate reaction was one of "magnificent revulsion". I like it, sort of...

A google image search of "ammonite skull" brought up a bunch of them - they're cool, but I'd hate to "ruin" a fossil by doing this to it.

Need to try to carve one out of wood!

I am divided on this. Although it is an amazing piece of art I don't know if I could do that to such a nice ammo. Either way, the artist has an amazing talent.
