JimB88
Its been a while but I was finally able to get out and hunt on Thur. My new job is third shift and doesn't leave me with much energy. I was able to muster up enough on Thur to hit the Pennington Formation and the Raccoon Mt. formation - both are road cuts in an adjacent county. The Pennington is Upper Mississippian and the Raccoon is Lowermost Pennsylvanian. I found a few things that I thought were neat in the Raccoon Mt. This occurs in a small portion of a cut that extends from the bottom of the plateau to the top. here's the formation..there's a lot of paper shale here... The part I look at is the grey wake or dirty sandstone which contains these neat little as-of-yet-unidentified goniatites. here's a typical sized one... I found two complete ones this size; but Ive always suspected they got bigger. Then I spotted this one sticking out of the rock...unfortunately it wasn't complete I includes a close up of the suture in case anyone can id the type..they all have the same pattern as far as I can tell. while going through the bottom of a small boulder (where I was finding the goni's- in a part that grades into shale, I found this impression... I think its lepidodendron..its very hard to photograph so one can see it... my batteries have run out so Ill pick up after I get some.
