Palmoxylon Need A Little Help

Recommended Posts

Hello friends.

last weekend i found this piece of upper campanium offshore-marine chalk in northwest germany.

The fossil looks like a stalk of palmoxylon sp., at the cutted end the capillarys are shown very well as circular dots.

am I right with the specifications?

sorry, i delete the other posts because i have post this Pamoxylon four times...

one is enough. ;)

sorry, karl

Thanks Carl, that's exactly the problem I have with that specimen too. The day when it was posted, I compared it to pictures in textbooks and Google Picture Search exactly because of that problem.

No doubt, this is a very interesting specimen. I hoped that some "wood specialists" would answer meanwhile. On the other hand, if it's really Palmoxylon, it would be an early one (campanian). One may also consider the possibility that early Palmoxylon wood was more irregular than later ones, a phenomen that occurs several times in palaeobotany that early members of a recently established group show a lesser extent of fixation of some features than later ones. So I wouldn't exclude Palmoxylon as an option, but would like to see some other early (cretaceous) Palmoxylon wood for comparison. Does someone have such "old" material and can show pics?

Furthermore, the outer surface of the specimen is not really suggestive of (modern) palm wood.

So I'm very curious what wood specialists will say.

Thanks for your answeres.

Yes the problem with less comarsionmaterial in the net are make the ID so difficult.

My stack is worn an eroded, so it don't have a bark, the irregular tubes are totally clear.

Sorry, i cannot make better pics.

The findspot is the Coesfelder Berg in the Muensterland. From there comes leafs, stacks or other plantmaterial about the foreshore deposits of the campanian.

Weird. They are not only spaced and sized oddly for Palmoxylon vascular bundles, they are perfectly circular, which bundles aren't, and don't seem to have any internal structure, which would be expected for bundles.

This is a small piece, less than a centimeter in diameter; could this explain the vascular organization?

Hi friends,

thank you for your help to translate!

"Dunno - don't know" sounds somewhat similar, but i can't translate it with my brain, it's just a slang.
