grandma flo
Hello everyone, I've had my fossils for some time, and now I have time to spend with them. the more time I spend with them the more I realize I don't know them at all! I have looked on the net and have been reading a lot. So now I have come to the experts. I have quite a few marine fossils and most of them smell like diesel!. They are from Lake Huron and are dark to black in color.what makes them smell?
PaleoRon
It sounds like you may have found them in an area where there was an oil of fuel spill. You may be able to clean them up with alcohol.
grandma flo
thank you, paleoron. these were found in lower michigan. their are shells and coral in a matrix of solid oily swirls. they are beautiful. the fossils look as though they died in this stuff. some are 8 inches long and 5 inches deep. Guest solius symbiosus
It is probably kerogen; the source of oil and gas.
