mikeymig
I just traded for a lot of very rare Eurypterids from the Pittsford shale and wanted to share them with you here on the forum. These are very unique and can only be found in Pittsford New York where there is no natural exposure to the fossil horizon. It was when the Erie Canal was being built over 100 years ago that the Pittsford shale was discovered along with strange and new Eurypterids. The recently found specimens came out during the building of an upscale grocery store that hit into the top of the horizon. The two most common species are Eurypterus pittsfordensis and Hughmilleria socialis. I also got a very rare Phyllocarid in the trade and have that posted under fossil ID to be sure I have the right name on it. I have a total of 12 specimens and it will be many more years before this Euryptrid layer will if ever see the light of day again. You can see Ostracods on many of the specimens as well as parts from other Eurypterids. Missourian
Nice score. Is there any chance one could scout out natural exposures of the Pittsford in creek beds? Context is critical.
Auspex
Outstanding acquisitions! I shudder to think what you gave up for them... mikeymig
Nice score. Is there any chance one could scout out natural exposures of the Pittsford in creek beds? Nope theres nothing to be had. It's about 3-4 feet under the parking lot of a grocery store, restaurant, gas station, and other little shops. Many times I've wondered how much there is to know. led zeppelin
Malcolmt
As others have said , great score......I am sure that you know about this site but for the benefit of others http://eurypterid.net This site is run by Sam Ciurca , pretty much the expert on this creatures. A number of members of the forum have now had the good fortune to meet him on some of our trips collecting eurypterids. glacialerratic
Very cool you were able to get some great fossils out of a temporary exposure. I like them all!
Shamalama
Wow, very nice and well done with the timeliness of the extraction. I know you didn't collect them yourself but you obviously know people who are keeping an eye out for opportunities. -Dave __________________________________________________ Geologists on the whole are inconsistent drivers. mikeymig
I got this lot from a friend that collected them but I collected the horizon both times it has been exposed in the past 20 years. I found a few but sold or traded them away since I don't collect Eurypterids and I know those who do would appreciate me releasing them to the world. In fact, all the specimens in this topic are for sale and I will list them here on the forum and eBay.
