Ash
This is from a young animal. Not mine, but is one of the remnants of a good friends collection (the rest of which was donated to the Australian Museum) Edited February 18, 2013 by Ash "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe" - Saint Augustine"Those who can not see past their own nose deserve our pity more than anything else." Cris
Fantastic! Is the shine on the bone a coating of something, or is it the natural mineralization?
Down under fossil hunter
Great looking jaw, it it part of I.S.'s collection?
Ash
Not I.S's. M.W =). That one was collected in the 1960's/70's. The shine is a laquer applied by the original finder. Sometimes ya do find bones that shiny though from water polishing! Ash
Well, we ended up taking this jaw to a local "Experts". Turns out its not the Diprotodon optatum we all thought! Jaw is from a currently unnamed critter (well, the name isnt confirmed yet..) which is still being described. We missed the blaringly obvious difference in the crowns of the teeth and the roundness of the bottom of the jaw. Sorry for the misleading title "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe" - Saint Augustine"Those who can not see past their own nose deserve our pity more than anything else."
