Mudduck
I found this vert this morning. Land find and unsure of the time frame. At first I thought it was a whale vert but noticed it was not. Unsure if fish or mammal. It is as large as a whale vert. Any ideas? sixgill pete
Definitely not a dolphin or whale vert in my opinion. Being hand sized I would think it was from a larger type fish. Maybe marlin or something along those lines. It does look like fish to me. Mudduck
Would a marlin have a vert almost as large as a whale vert?
sixgill pete
Mudduck, that vert is handsizede verts get much larger than that. Here are 2 pics of some I have. Notice the ends are flat not concave like yours. I am just guessing marlin. But it is not whale. masonboro37
Killer vert! I have no idea on the ID, but I did see a large tuna vert in one of my books which has a bit of a resemblance, sort of. Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom". Mudduck
I have several whale vert's. This is not like any of them. I have a tuna vert also, but this does not resemble the one that I have. I know verts will look have different appearances from which the location of the spine. It is as large as some of my whale verts. Marlins and tunas, do they get as large?

mako-mama
I believe it is a marlin type vert. They typically are larger than tuna verts. I've personally never seen any "whale" vert that small--only a couuple of dolphins-but the porportions are way wrong for that. Also, that deep center is indicative of fish and not any mammal.
