Best Fossil Trip So Far! Bouldnor Formation

Recommended Posts

I have been collecting fossils from the bouldnor formation for nearly a year, its close by so we often walk the dog and have a look in the shingle on the beach. It's great because you always find bits and bob's and its so well preserved. If your lucky and look hard you maybe rewarded with a croc or shark tooth!

I have been to the beaches maybe 20/25 times sometimes for 30 mins sometimes 2-3 hours and I have had some nice little finds, nothing rare but I do have a lot of turtle shell a dozen croc teeth and 4 shark teeth plus other fish and bone.

On sunday I decided to go to a new location and I took a friend (the jammy one that is just starting fossil hunting, this would be trip 3 and he always finds great stuff ie he sound a shark spine on trip 1, trip 2 found a croc tooth bigger than any of mine and so on)

With in 2 mins on the new beach he found a nice croc scute, then when I said "lets have a look down here on this shingle bank" he picked up a nice piece of bone also bigger than any bone I have found, the day went on like this.

We had a lot of beach to cover and we were not sure where would be best so we had a slow walk, eyes to the ground and every 10-15 metres we stopped and had a 5 min rummage in the shingle. finds were a little slow to start with but after a couple of hours it paid off and the finds came thicker and faster and got better!!! :D

I found myself crawling on my hands and knees in the clay, it got messy and it got worse....3 hours later it was time to go but as we got carried away and stayed longer than we should have we missed the tide and the clear route off the beach was gone. There were lots of fallen trees on the foreshore and the sea came up and around them so at first we climbed over, across and along them. Some had too many smaller branches in the way so I tried to take a short cut across the clay slips as the dog seemed to think this was an easier route, I must remember I am a little heavier than the dog and I sank to the top of my wellys, although not that deep it took every ounce of my strength to pull my leg free with boot. after this it was clear I could not get much messier so I decided to walk around the trees and nearly up to my waste in the freezing sea. DISPITE ALL THIS WE WERE STILL HAPPY AND SMILLING WITH OUR GREAT AND NEW FINDS! the things we do for old bits of bone and teeth!

Monday came and I delayed work and just had to get down to the beach again, this time only 2 hour trip and the tides were on my side. here are some of my finds (they are around 28/30 m.y.o)

(note to self, get knee pads!... still killing now)

day 1, best day ever (so far)

My first vert, I thought turtle but now think croc tail?

post-10263-0-23659400-1362526405_thumb.jpg

fish verts, mainly tiny ones, not seen them this small before, again most found in one trip before is 4 this trip I found 26, they were almost too small to pick up.

My mate was winning with the finds, will post a photo of some of his later, he had 2 big croc verts and large croc tooth but we both agreed I had the find of the day with his vert, great condition, I thought it was mammal at first but after a look online I now suspect turtle, not what I expected from turtle?

lol thanks guys! I do like my vert, not sure how often they come up in tack and not too beach worn, will find out more at our local museum later, maybe today but im not sure I think I would have preferred the turtle with tooth in it :( , type of thing you may never find again. I want to go see it to see if its a croc tooth or shark?

I have so much turtle shell im starting to bag some of the smaller bits in bags, get lables on and give it to the museum maybe to give to the kids that visit.

was thinking of making a turtle mosaic of a swimming turtle with some of the other fragments (will be the closest I get to a whole turtle for now) and I think a good way to display it on the wall rather than just kept in a box.

thanks Thomas, I know the shell with tooth makes me feel sick! so gutted it was not me that found it, its only his 3rd fossil trip! on the other hand im glad one of us found it could so easily have been missed and maybe a bit longer rolling around in the shingle the tooth may have been warn away or fallen off so I am glad. I don't think he will be interested in swapping but may see if he is interested in swapping for a Wyoming fish or something. I think the local museum maybe interested in displaying it in their "found by amateurs" cabinet.

Adie, I loved reading your report and seeing all the pics. The pics really help "see" what you are describing and make us feel like we're almost there with you. It's neat to read the report and hear the excitement and enthusiasm you guys have when you're out collecting; it's both therapeutic and addicting - makes you do crazy stuff like go into work late or take extra days off to go fossil collecting when the conditions look right.

I also get a kick out of learning new colloquialisms like your "jammy" and "jammy git". I had to google them to figure out what they meant; (Jammy = lucky, and Jammy git = lucky bugger).

Keep the trip reports coming!

Daryl.

 lol had to google jammy git, love it! glad you enjoyed reading it :) it really is addictive, I would love to go every day feel like I could be missing things after every tide, there are 4 local locations I like and know, another 5 I need to find out about and put some time aside to investigate, then on the mainland another 10 places I have never been and at least 10 places in the usa to go, sounds like a full time hobbie to me! great stuff.

paleoworld, let me know if you fancy hooking up for hunting when your over.

saw the turtle shell with croc tooth today, nice little thing and you can see the indentation from a tooth on the other jaw just next to it.

also another photo of my pine cone and a nut or pip/fruit stone he found.

Wow. As I can't ever really find these things, I would be ridiculously excited to find one of these fossils! Awesome finds.

Oh man! that's nice! You've got a great site for collecting. I wouldn't get much done the first few hours, drinkin' coffee and enjoying the view first.

we did have a flask of coffee but not time to take in the view or sip coffee......THERE ARE FOSSILS TO FIND! it does start off as a desperate search like you have lost your car keys and need to find them as the tide is coming in, but after a few hours it slows down and is a bit more relaxing.

Hi Adie_uk

I`m taking my family to the Isle of Wight this year in August for 5 days we are staying in Ventnor, if you have any locations for me and my son to scour around that you could recommend that would be greatly appreciated.

Darren.

p.s. Sorry I was dumbstruck by your finds forgot to mention excellent finds.

Hi Darren, I guess your bringing a car? happy to help , still got more locations to test and learn from so will be able to tell you more just before you come. is it a fossil holiday or do you have other things to do?

access to some locations is tricky for very young kids, locations will depend on you and your family and what your comfortable climbing down or over?

Hi there ,

It will be mostly hunting for fossils shall be travelling by car. Very good point you noted from a safety aspect my son is 6yr old and my daughter is two yr old so I'm guessing that could limit the locations. It would most likely be just my son and I hunting.

Thank you for your reply look forward to hearing from you nearer the time.

Darren & son.
