Auspex
brings up my next questions....quality, rarity, Is It real? In your opinions I mentioned replica because it's a pretty spectacular fossil to find laying around the house, and sporting a specimen number... This begs many questions! Auspex
LINK Any idea at all how it might have come to be laying about your house? This belongs to someone (or some museum collection); it has a catalog number inked on it. Do you have any idea at all who that may be? Museum grade Camarasaurus teeth aren't usually found just laying around! Museum grade Camarasaurus teeth aren't usually found just laying around! Dang Chas, are you positive that Museum Grade dinosaur teeth aren't usually just found lying around the house? I was getting ready to set off on an exploration in the bedrooms of my teenage sons - there's all kinds of stuff just laying on their floor, and some of it is quite old too...and prolly dirty as well. Oh well, guess I gotta keep working to earn a buck. I must admit though, that before the ID's of Camarasaurus came forth, I too was actually thinking some sort of dinosaur tooth based on the "crown" portion looking like a shovel - it reminded me of some other dino teeth/tooth I saw on TFF in the past. I credit anything that I know about dinosaurs to learning it here on TFF from members like JP etc. I don't know enough yet to be dangerous and risk a silly ID attempt, but it felt good that I was even thinking dino tooth before the ID's came in. Jesse
Having applied many, many labels to fossils at the museum here, I agree with Auspex that that looks a little suspicious.
piranha
Having applied many, many labels to fossils at the museum here, I agree with Auspex that that looks a little suspicious. Maybe, maybe not... I have seen plenty of fossils accessioned from private collections that are labeled in a similar fashion. Many amateur collectors are well versed in the practice.
