Bev
This is the way coolest brach I have ever found! And check out the little tiny bumps on it! And the perfect tiny brach in the middle of the bigger one! Ordovician Era, assuming Galena.. But what do I know Any thoughts on an ID? I'm between making this into jewelry or putting it in a display case! Thanks for looking! Bev The more I learn, I realize the less I know. erose
Looks to be a Strophemena of some sort. Not sure what the Galena species would be. It is all one brach. The interior surface with the muscle scars and all. ted coulianos
what you have is the pedicle or lower valve of a brachiopod, possibly an Ordovician species called Rafinesquina or Strophomena ; what looks like a small brach in the center is really some of the internal supports for the lophophore. The lower shell is very thin & convex, & the upper valve is just as thin & fits overtop, with what would appear to be very, very little room for the fleshy bits inside. check this out on the Cinncinati Drydredger's site: http://drydredgers.org/brachraf.htm & http://drydredgers.org/brachstropho.htm Edited April 17, 2013 by ted coulianos

Bev
Thank you Squalicorax, but I'm afraid that database is WAY over my head. No pictures that I could find, not to say that I am all that computer literate. But I think it is meant for experts who know what they are doing. Bev The more I learn, I realize the less I know.
