Shark, Ray And Fish Micros From New Mexico

Marco,

Now I am convinced that it is a Squalicorax symphyseal. Search Squalicorax symphyseal in general fossil discussion and you will see an image of a similar tooth from the same site. That site produces a fair number of synphyseal Squalicorax. The first one I found from that site had zero serrations on the main blade-only the side cusps were serrated. Since Squalicorax is the only serrated tooth in that fauna I knew what it belonged to could only be Squalicorax. Keith

My tooth is 7mm. "siteseer" posted in that post on "Squalicorax symphyseal": "I have seen a tooth from Edgemont, South Dakota (Carlile Shale, Turonian) very similar to that but slightly larger (almost 7mm high) and straighter. One side cusplet is separated from the crown but the other is connected to the crown. It was Identified as a symphyseal of S. falcatus - the most common or perhaps the only species of the genus at Edgemont."

My tooth definitely seems to match that description.

However, Squalicorax falcatus is not identified in Bulletin 52 which describes the site fauna where the tooth came from as you know, only Scindocorax novimexicanus, Scindocorax sp. aff. S. novimexicanus, Squalicorax sp. cf. S. Lindstromi, Squalicorax sp. aff S. yangaensis, and Squalicorax cf. S. yangaensis.

I now definitely believe the tooth could be a symphyseal but from which of the above species identified in Bulletin 52?

Thank you for pointing this out to me.
