RichW9090
In 1972 I travelled to the island of Cyprus to collect fossils from raised Quaternary shorelines. I traveled by car around the entire perimeter of the island, and crossed over the volcanic higlands in the dead center of the island as well. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence". AgrilusHunter
Cyprus is such a beautiful country! I've always wanted to go there! Ridgehiker
Thanks for the photos. Things were not so peaceful after your visit...Greek/ Turkish war just afterwards. Cyprus...it was my first foreign posting in in 1978. Stationed 6 months at Famagusta with Canadian UN Peacekeeping Forces. I was a lowly lieutenant but slipped away now and then. I poked more around archeological sites....didn't know at that time about fossils on the island. Wish I had seen your fossil photos 35 years ago! Plantguy
Hi Rich, cool photos of the geology and of the 70's....I was out reading on the web due to your post and saw that multiple hippo species became extinct there. What species are those bones from? What other material did you find? Regards, Chris
RichW9090
It's all Hippoptamus minor, now called Phanourios minor. That's the only species on Cyprus; but many of the other islands have species of their own. I didn't find any other mammals at that locality. A few are known from Cyprus, including a dwarf elephant, a gennet and others. . 1 The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
