Middle Jurassic Vertebra. Any Suggestions?

I found this recently while breaking up a block from the upper Aalenian marine layers in the Wutach valley of southern Germany trying to get at an ammonite. I've found Ichthyosaurier vertebra and paddle bones in these layers before, but this doesn't have the form I'm used to seeing. I'm assuming it is a vertebra. but I've no idea what might have produced it, although it's probably from some sea creature, maybe a crocodile. Any ideas?

It split in the middle. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it out of the matrix once I've glued it back together, since the separating layer is good.

great find!

It appears to be a plesiosaur dorsal vertebra with one of the paired foramina visible. Any chance there is more of it?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your assessment. Unfortunately there was nothing more in the stone except a few little bits. The layer it was found in belongs to a condensated zone, so the chances of finding any more are practically nil, but since I'm digging in it systematically, I'll be watching now more carefully.
