Mamadigsthedirt
This was found in the dirt around a construction site. I was told it was brought in from Lee Creek Mine in Aurora, N.C.. I am in New Bern, N.C., and there are deposits of Lee Creek dirt everywhere. I have searched countless sources but have not found anything resembling this piece. Plax
there are rock quarries in the vicinity of New Bern so wouldn't necessarily say it was from Aurora despite your source. Am thinking I see the spiral of a coprolite on the end in one pic. Odd that the two pics look so different. The additional rock bit is not part of the coprolite (if it is one)
sixgill pete
Most of the construction sites around New Bern get their fill from the MM quarry on old Hwy 70 west of town. Unfortunately this particular MM quarry does not allow any collecting. As far as what you have, I would tend to agree with Plax's assessment. Mamadigsthedirt
Thanks to the two of you! Sorry about the terrible pics. I am using a phone camera and the lighting is terrible. I am sending a few more pics that came out better. This piece is extremely light and very smooth. I had at one point tried to see if the pieces could be separated. After looking through a stronger magnifying glass, it almost has a rock/bone-like appearance between the two. Thanks again for the replies!!!!! Auspex
You say it is extremely light; does it float (or come close to it)? Mamadigsthedirt
Sinks straight to the bottom. When I first saw it, I thought maybe it fit into some kind of socket, like a ball joint maybe. But the more I looked at the surface and irregularity of the shape I changed my mind. It is a mystery for sure!!
