Fossil Teeth, North Of Dallas?

Auralius

Recommended Posts

Hey, all. My boys and I went shark-tooth hunting for the first time today, in a creek bed north of Dallas, TX. We found a few decent shark teeth, plus a few other things I'm pretty confident are teeth, but I don't know what kind. The top two are obviously of a kind. The largest one I picked up thinking it was just sort of a neat two-tone rock, but when I got home and sorted through our haul, I realized it was another tooth - like a human incisor, but six or eight times the size. It's fossilized for sure - not just some cow or horse tooth, I don't think. Please help identify! Thanks a ton!

Hello and welcome to the Forum. :)

Looks like you had a fun and productive day.

Although the pic is rather small, from what I can make out,... the top two teeth appear to be Ptychodus teeth - we would need close ups of the top of the teeth to be able to pin down the species for you.

The longer middle tooth appears to be a fairly worn sawfish rostral tooth.

Nice finds, thanks for posting them.

Welcome again.

Regards,

Fossildude19 - thanks! Ptychodus appears to be correct. Cool!

Here are better pics of the "giant incisor." I don't think it's from a sawfish. Surely it's from a large mammal of some kind, yes? Or maybe a paradigm-changing proof of giant humans that I'll be able to sell for several million dollars? That'd be ok too. :)

Oops! My bad - I didn't really look at the second pic of you holding it, and the other pic was too small.

Yes looks like a mammal tooth - possibly horse??

Not sure, maybe Rich or someone else will stop in and look, and give a more accurate ID.

Mammal teeth are not my thing.

Thanks for posting better pics.

I have mine that I found about a month ago in POC. I have been wondering also, thanks for the ID. :)

Cool! I don't know that we've gotten a definitive ID yet though - anybody?

I am curious to know the verdict. At first I thought it looked cat like, but since I am thinking human like. Any help would be great. :)

Bump again. Anybody? Shall we just assume there was a race of giants that lived north of Dallas? Sure would be some fun new anthropology...

I would suggest making another post in the ID section with a title of TEXAS MAMMAL TOOTH.

That way, you'll get the mammal experts attention.

Auralius, looks like that might be the only way to ID it. I had tried a while back and never got anything on it. Maybe this time............ :D
