Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me identify this mummified Canidae (my guess). My questions are:

- Was it naturally mummified?

- What kind of animal is it?

info:

- More than 40 cm long (The floor tiles in the pic are 20 cm long)

- Found in the desert of North Africa.

I have more pic if you guys needs any.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Steven,

If it is a canine my guess would be it's a "Sloughi". This is a breed of sighthound used to run game for the hunter in North Africa. It has a very deep chest and is very slim in the hips, bred to run very long distances. HUGE set of lungs on four legs! If I remember correctly the Sloughi can run at a top speed of 35 miles per hour!

I wouldn't even hazard a guess. These are terrible pictures. Sorry, but anything anyone says on the basis of these pictures is pure guessing.

The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".

Take some good pics of the feet, and see if you can get a clear shot inside of the mouth. Any claws or teeth present?

I'm so thankful to everyone who has responded. Jed, Creto, everyone. A Soughi is a good guess. We use them a lot here. I apologize for the quality of the pictures. I had to reduce the resolution of the originals so they would be under the max size allowed for attachments. I uploaded all the originals I got to this link:

I took them while in a hurry. I tried to take close ups to the head and the legs. And yes it has claws who are bent upward, and sharp, relatively long, thin, curved canine teeth. I don't know if the front legs being folded is giving the illusion that they're way too short than they should be for a canidae.

I'll try to get the close-ups you guys requested ASAP.
