sixgill pete
I found these items on Friday at an outing to the MM Quarry in Castle Hayne NC. The Quarry is very well known for it Eocene goodies, but these items came from some dark, Cretaceous PeeDee formation material. There is always a chance they are Eocene, piles do get mixed. Herb
#1 a really nice geodized something. Plax
#1 looks like a partially filled snail steinkern, nice mineralization, #2 looks like a flat bone of some sort. A lot of the reworked material in the New Hanover Member looks like this as far as condition.
sixgill pete
Thanks Herb and Plax. #1 is very nicely mineralized and as Herb said geodized in the opening. I think calling it a steinkern is probably correct. As far as #2, I was thinking bone when I picked it up, but was not sure. It had a very odd surface and quite frankly the pictures do not show the detail well. But, I am ok with calling it bone. sixgill pete
Skylar, I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. It is very cool looking in person. To bad you guys couldn't make the trip. Have you all been out hunting lately? Plax
if you got the "bone" in the Peedee it could be something off a marine reptile such as mosasaur or plesiosaur. If in the New Hanover Member, the phosphatic conglomerate, it could be cretaceous or eocene. Plenty of archeocete has been found at Castle Hayne. Even a big bone splint is difficult to narrow down. Not enough diagnostic characteristics. If you're going to fossil fair in Raleigh in a couple of weeks bring it along. Usually plenty of experts there.
