Bev
A sandstone look is what I would like. I tried embedding actual sand into the plaster of Paris but it just didn't work well. What does this sandstone texturing tool look like? Is this stuff available at say Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Or do I have to order it in and if so from where? The more I learn, I realize the less I know. fossilized6s
I get mine at Hobby Lobby, but im sure it's at Michael's too. I'll shoot a picture of my texture molds tonight Bev. Here's a few examples Bev and whom ever else may attempt this. These are negative molds made of Super Sculpey pulled off of different textures (alligator skin, stingray skin, orange peel, etc.). In your case you would press this Super Sculpey onto sandstone to create your desired texture. Peel it off carefully, then bake till hard. If i were you i would make the mold about the size of a #2 pencil eraser, so you can get into those little nooks and crannies. Hopefully this helps. If anyone has any questions just PM me. I dont want to hijack this thread anymore then i may already have.... Bev
I am getting closer to an acceptable chess set with fossilized6s suggestions. So this is where I am at so far utilizing an air dry clay because I used silicone as a cement and didn't think it would stand up to baking. Clay used. Latest version of the chess set, still not happy with the rooks or pawns. Kings Knights Continued... The more I learn, I realize the less I know. Bev
Crinoid queens. Real crinoids on the back. This is my very first attempt at modeling clay - not great but got the job done and much better to work with than plaster of Paris. What did come out of this experiment was a new idea for displaying fossils: I made a little clay ball, pressed a dino head into it and pressed the dino bone into it, let it dry. Painted it and it makes a wonderful fossil holder! I could see someone sculpting what the live creature would have looked like and then setting the fossil onto it or any other variety of creative ways to display fossils. So, there is where I am at so far with my fossil chess set. Any ideas? Suggestions? Do you have one you have made and would like to share it? The more I learn, I realize the less I know.
