jcbshark
I went out this weekend with the intention to only scout for new ground and not do any digging, with the exception of getting a few more gallons of micro matrix.I sifted micro stuff for the first hour then put on my wetsuit to brave the chilly water (it probably had to be close to 68) Brrrrrrr lol.I managed to cover about a mile of it in about six hours. It was pretty relaxing compared to digging and sifting for sure.Once you slip your head under you don't hear very much. That became apparent to me when I thought I heard something once, then again a little louder.I stuck my head up and there was a man and his son yelling at me because he thought I was a dead body floating in there lol.I assured him I was far from dead,at least I hope so! I was able to snorkel most of the creek and where I couldn't I just surface picked.I didn't kill it by any means but on the same hand I didn't work very hard either, and I did find a couple areas I hope to visit in the very near future armed with my shovel and sifter. Here are a few pics of the nicer finds of the day.I also did get about 15 pounds of turtle shell,non-descript pieces of bone, and a few chunks of ivory.a Glyptodont osteoderma pretty nice vert,I'm thinking gatoranother view of the same vert,if anyone knows what it is please feel free to let me knowa couple Hemis2 nice little Makoswhat is the nicest Meg I think I found all year lol.I just haven't had any luck with them this yearand here is my favorite find of the day.It was at the end of my day, wife already texting about what time I'll be home.I told her I was leaving in five minutes, not my five minutes but the real minutes that clocks measure.I walked past an area that was all sand because I could see ripples that indicate the water upstream was shallow and more than likely gravel filled. As soon as I got to the bottom of the ripples this Bison tooth was just sitting there waiting for a ride home.I knew right then if I didn't leave right away it was going to become a "my 5 minute event" so in my pocket it went and I turned around without even peeking at the ground again lol.I know where I'll start next time anyway. Thanks Don.When I found that vert it was in such good shape I thought it was modern but it's way too heavy to be.Sounds like you need to head south for the winter.I wear a wetsuit if the waters less than about 78.You really turn into a @#$% about cold when you've lived here for a bit. mrieder79
LOL! That sounds like the dilemma I face at the end of every hunt. Do I leave on time and earn brownie points or do I push it in hopes of that last minute mega-find? Interestingly enough, I have had several last minute finds that made the trip. Great looking teeth and fossils. Glad you had a productive outing. I really like those makos. Luck is the most important skill of a fossil diver. jcbshark
Nice finds. Like the two makos Thank you.It was a little odd to me to find whole ones in the creek but not busted up.It seems a lot of them I find are in rough shape if they were subjected to anything other than ideal conditions. Thanks. It always seems like I have to leave as soon as it starts to get good.Either it's dinner, getting dark, lighting,a mile hike back to the truck in the dark thru a swamp. It's as if we must sacrifice something to get the good finds. If you hunt in a hurricane you'd probably stumble upon the find of your life, and you know what. You'll see me out there too lol. Classic. I have used that in a slightly different way. I'm staying till they start or stop biting!
