Found Before The Snow Fell In N.y.

Here are some brachs we found before the snow covered the ground. The site is usually covered by posion ivy, leaves, and small trees but after summer and before winter you can find some great fossils lying on the surface. Unlike other Lingula fossils we find, this specimen is inflated. This brachiopod is pyritized and was found in a large nodule. I have found many Ligula over the years but none of them were display worthy. I like how this specimen has a natural base that stands on its own and it fits in nicely with the other top brachs in the display case.

When Im splitting shale looking for trilobites, Its fun to collect these brachs during my lunch break. I cant sit still for long so I will eat my lunch and walk around the hillside looking for corals and brachiopods like these. I usually put my daughter to work and she collects surface finds but shes now in search of a complete Dipleura. She will still surface collect but it has to be a contest with me and she thinks she wins everytime. :)

Thanks

Mikey

Mikey;

Very cool brachs, especially the Lingula. Have yet to find one of those. Yours is exceptional. Congratulations!

Thanks Tim, all of the specimens in the photo are what I call upgrades. I have bags & boxes of brachs all separated by species and the best end up in my brach case with drawers. The best of the best go on display and usually it's a single specimen but the Megastrophia and Spinocyrita are represented by 3 specimens.

Have a great Xmas!

Jeff, if you make it out my way to collect before spring, I have a Silurian site where you can collect slabs with several Lingula on them. I found a slab there last week that had at least 25 complete specimens.
