sixgill pete
Starting about 10 years or so ago, I began bringing 5 gallon buckets of Aurora matrix home for my grandkids and nieces and nephews to search. I dumped them in a far back corner on my property for them, and occasionally I would look also. Over time I got a rather good sized pile going. There were many makos and tigers and megs found in there, along with many other cool things. Including a Squalodon molar and incisor and a few small sperm whale teeth. Then s about 5 or 6 years ago, I fine screened some and cleaned it, starting my quest for micro's, and I found some amazing stuff in that pile. Flash forward, lots of new bucketfuls, kids quit searching the pile; it became overgrown and forgotten. A few weeks ago, I did my annual ditch burning, also burning the scrub on the pile. Well today I went out in my yard, moving some stuff, putting up water hoses and getting it cleared up for this dang storm that is destined to hit here in coastal NC. (I hate snow) It is supposed to be one of those every 10-15-20 year storms we get that dumps a ridiculous amount of snow on us. (Saying my area could get 10-12 or even more ... yuck) well I was out by the pile, it was sunny and nice today and I thought let me crawl around and see what I can find. Well dang, 15 minutes later I was impressed. A nice hemi, a cow shark, and 2 ray teeth that I normally do not find and what I believe is a white wahoo tooth. Then I remembered just how good that old spoil material was. Well, I fine screened me 2 - 5 gallon bucketfuls, now I have to clean them and search for micro's. all the goods ....... the better stuff ........ sixgill pete
Everyone , thanks for the response. It is/was kind of cool to have spoils right here and Lisa, don't worry, no one else will be posting from my yard!! I always try to keep a good amount of matrix on hand. Besides my forgotten pile, I also have a small plastic child's swimming pool full, many many buckets full and another pile in the side yard my son in law brought. However, all of this is newer stuff and no where near as fossiliferous. MarcoSr
Don Is the fish tooth lightly serrated? If so, it definitely looks like a wahoo tooth. I really miss the reject from years ago. It seemed to have a lot more specimens in great condition and a lot more variety. Although the real shelly matrix of the last few years has also been good. Marco sr. Marco sr. Marco, it is very lightly serrated. I was pretty certain about it being wahoo. Yea, I wish all of the matrix was still as good. The two ray teeth above the top of the penny, can you ID them, or should I take better pics. I have my thoughts. Although, I have them from the Miocene of VA. I think your two choices for the ray teeth are Plinthicus or Paramobula. It is difficult to tell for sure from the pictures. sixgill pete
This only makes the second one I have found from there, the first has a full root. My grandson Nick found a partial jaw with 4 teeth in it about 2 years ago in a spoil pile out in the field. As far as the ray teeth, I was thinking the same, maybe one of each. I may take some better pictures and post them shortly.
