Buena Vista Museum Sth Dig, 3" Mako!

Recommended Posts

On our way home from three days with the Buena Vista Museum paleo dig. Exhausted but elated after three days of digging. Full report to come.

In the meantime, here is something to wet your whistle.

The montage is a before, middle, and end of the "ditch" my Brother and I dug yesterday, with a 2 3/4" hastalis I pulled out. It was my personal best tooth, until today.

The other two photos, are of the tooth I pulled out today. 3" on the nose! Another personal best tooth on the same trip. I couldn't believe it.

Wow! The color and shape is just awesome, congrats!

Looks like you guys put in some hard work for that.

I can't wait to get out there to try it myself sooner rather than later

When they dry the color fades a bit.

Thank you all!

Joe, that was the tooth I was saving to find the next time out. I hope you two had a good time. I need to plan another trip soon.

LOL, sorry. I'll put it back.

Here it is after drying out.

Sometimes the color change is very dramatic. At least twice, I have dug out a watermelon-pink hastalis that faded within seconds to a duller mix of colors with still some pink in them). It was so weird that I questioned my own observation but other people have been witnesses as well.

Years ago, Bob Ernst told me that you can preserve the color if you can get some glyptol on them fast enough though glyptol also adds green to it.

Great find, by the way. If you collected 300 days out of the year, you still might not find one especially one as nice as that.

When they dry the color fades a bit.

Thank you all!

That was a well earned tooth. I'm very happy for you, Joe. The colors of the teeth there have to be seen in person, there are subtle variations of pink, blue, purple, etc. with a depth and translucent nature to them.

  • 2 weeks later...

An update with a tragic ending.

I bought a set of calipers. After 45 minutes of measuring, this is the biggest slant length.

Wish I hadn't bought those calipers.
