Strange Summerville (Sc) Find

Recommended Posts

I found this recently in a creek near my house in Summerville South Carolina. The formation is Chandler Bridge. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. From the rounded end, it reminds me of a acorn. From the other end, it resembles some type of tooth. There are little bumps, or cusps, on each side of it. It looks like enamel, but I am not 100% sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. I hope the photos are clear enough for someone to help with an ID.

I took the liberty of trying to crop and fix a couple of your pics. They still do not show enough detail to give me any idea. You need to get some good close up detailed pictures, that would help greatly in trying to ID this.

Not my specialty but if you put a gun to my head I would guess it was some type of fish tooth. Another wild idea would be some sort of mammal (Tapir?) juvenile tooth. I'd be leaning fish though. Better pictures will certainly help. You wanted ideas.... :)

My first thought was deciduous mammal incisor of some sort. That probably means it cannot possibly be a deciduous mammal incisor.

Like sixgill suggested, i think it would be very beneficial for all of us if you could get clearer close up pictures.

I have played with my camera's settings some more, as well as fiddled with the photos in a couple of photo programs. I don't think these photos are a lot better, but they may be good enough to get help with an ID. If not, no biggie. I will just put this little guy in my "Unknown" jar for now. As always, thank you for any help.

These images are certainly good enough, but as far as my limited knowledge gets me is that is seems to be a tooth crown, or part thereof.

I agree with Auspex; this seems to be a crown to some type of tooth. Might even be the deciduous tooth Scylla was guessing.

Those pictures are much better. Whatever setting you used sure did the trick. I still, really have no idea, other than I think it is a tooth crown as Auspex, Scylla and Daryl suggested.

Thanks guys! I will keep looking for answers. As far as the camera settings go, um...maybe I should have written them down. Haha. Thanks again!

  • 2 months later...

It resembles drum fish teeth, but I'm not sure about the grooves.
