Very Rare Find

Decided at the last minute to meet a good friend of mine for a hike in the Lincoln Creek Formation to a site that some loggers told us about last year. Mostly, these 'rumor sites' never pan out... that was not the case this trip. After a vigorous up hill climb with packs, we found a small slip as the logger had mentioned.

Within a few minutes, we found 2 concretions, 2 exposed Panopeous and a Pulalius. I was thinking "goona be a good day". About that moment, my friend hollered "I just found some vertebrae"! I slung a rope around the tree and swung over to see a complete fish fossil. I have only heard of one other complete fish being found, but never have seen one.

He called the Burke Museum and they're excited to examine this fish and he's made an appointment with them. She also told him that only 3 fossil fish have been reported and given to the Burke from Washington! Here's a couple pictures. This may not look like much, but this is a fantastic find.... cool!

Thanks Libby! Yep, as is, no prep and no touch. Seems fragile. I'm not sure if part of the head is sticking out or the tail of a 2nd one is near the tail. The bulk of the pieces fell down the cliff into the woods. I heard someone playing 'Taps' in the distance as it fell into the abyss. ;)
