DD1991
That's astounding. Guess the construction workers building the dam don't seem to have realized that the construction site is laden with marine vertebrate fossils. Does anyone have a geologic map of the bay area showing the color keys for Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks so that we get a complete picture of what California's coastline looked like in the Neogene? I would appreciate it.
Boesse
Nope, the construction work has known about the fossils since the project started - they've had a couple of mitigation paleontologists on site during the project in order to save any fossils from being destroyed. In other places, construction crews often blast right through bones and don't even know it - and nobody ever finds out. Mitigation programs like this are great, and they've produced some of the most spectacular marine mammal fossils ever found from places like Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties.
