Mysterious Bone Piece From Aurora

Hello, here is a piece of bone I found today. At the first look it seems just a piece of shell but after clean up it show a clear bone structure, so I now think it seems a piece of bone... It's about 1.5''*1.2*1 in dimension and has a quite unusual shape. I have no idea about what this could be, neither did those in the Aurora fossil museum today. But we thought a part of the ear bone might be a possible answer...

Thanks!! --YZ

I think it's a fragmented and abraded odontocete squamosal.

Thanks! But I'm not sure if squamosals will have such a weird surface of this specimen...

Most cetacean squamosals do, if you look at a disarticulated skull it's pretty apparent. The corrugated suture is probably the parieto-squamosal suture. I'd recommend checking out Mead and Fordyce (2009): https://repository.si.edu/handle/10088/8298

Thanks for the explanation and the reference! It makes much more sense to me now :):D
