Gen. et sp. indet.
Ordovician or Silurian erratic boulder of baltic origin. Can you identify this brachiopod at the order level?
FossilDAWG
I really think it would be impossible to ID that specimen in it's present condition. Even identifying it as a brachiopod, based on the photos, is a stretch. The only thing I can suggest it that you remove all the actual shell material to generate a mold of the internal surface. You could then make a cast that might show enough features, such as muscle scars and lophophore supports, for an ID. Personally, I'd spend my time looking for better material unless you really need an ID on this particular specimen. Don
caldigger
Maybe it's just me, but to me it just looks like some iron staining on a hunk of quartzite. I'm not seeing a shell shape of any kind.
TqB
I can see a brachiopod there OK especially in the second photo where it seems to have a straight hinge line. Wouldn't like to go much further though. Tarquin
Gen. et sp. indet.
Thank you for your answers and tips. The specimen is much more informative when viewed live - photos are bad. Yeap, it's a brachiopod all right and the hinge line is straight! Edited September 22, 2014 by Gen. et sp. indet.
