Wood?

I found this while hiking last week in northwestern Wyoming (Bighorn Basin). Looks like fossilized wood to me, but is different than anything I've ever seen. I am no expert, but the color and structure looks a little strange to me.

It is composed of iron-sandstone accretion. If wood is involved at all, it would be only as an impression on the surface in the first image, IMO.

Agree, it looks similar in preservation to imprints of Mississippian wood from sandstone we find around here.
