Mammal Tooth Found Off Coast Of Kauai, Hawaii

Hopefully, this one won't send folks off in mad gales of laughter, but my wife and I found what I think is a mammal tooth while snorkeling for shells, off the coast of Kauai, on our honeymoon.

If it matters, it was found in about 4 feet of water, off the eastern side of the island.

It's probably just a dog tooth or pig tooth, but I'm curious if anyone can give me an educated guess?

Also, how would a layman such as meself go about trying to date the thing?

(I can hear it now... "It's a dog tooth. About two weeks old. Throw it back.")

There are no terrestrial mammals native to Hawaii; the oldest were pigs brought in by canoe.

From a paleontological perspective, unless it's from a marine mammal, it's "modern".

None of which helps ID it; I'll leave that to someone who might actually know. :)

From the size of it I'd venture Pig. Too bad the crown is in such bad shape.

But then...maybe you found part of Capt. Cook :D

Be true to the reality you create.

Ah, you know what I bet it is?

Refuse from a luau. Pig roast-on-a-spit and all that.

Dang. A grody pig tooth, prolly not even a year old.

Now I really REALLY want to find something real.

(Sure am glad I didn't go ahead and wear that tooth around my neck or anything... boy, would I have felt dumb.)

Thanks for the input!
