My Third Try At Shark-Tooth Hill (Wow-Sers)

Hey-lo Everybody,

I took a couple from the Mineral and Gem Society that I belong to down to STH for June 4, 5, 6.

We dug in the east pit for 28 hours between 7:30 am Thursday and 4:00 pm Saturday (it got to hot to stay any longer).

There were a multitude of really nice finds made on all three days -- here are a couple pics of the best find, which came out about half way through the first day.

Looks like the forward object is a canine tooth and probably a piece of bone for the top one. Try prepping some of it off (not hard!) to reveal what you've got. There may even be some more "prizes" within.

Hey-lo All,

Sorry for the delay. I see that caldigger has let the cat out of the bag, so here are some more pics from different angles...

I cleaned it on the evening of the second night, and showed it to Rob Ernst on Saturday morning. Rob took the pic that was on the STH face book page.

I think that there are more teeth in the mandible that are covered with a selenite secretion. There is a second k-9 laying under the first with a broken tip (I do have most of the crown of it). It is a little wet in My prep photos.

Thanks for looking...

Tony

PS I will post more of the great finds from this trip as I get them cleaned. Please bear with Me as it may take a while.

Fantastic, Tony! You already have your entry for FOTM!

Thanks,

I have to get it properly cleaned (which may take some time), then I will see if it looks good enough for that.

Hay All,

Although it seems anticlimactic, there were a lot of other things that were found on this trip. I have not had the time to get most of it cleaned, let alone photographed. Here are some photos of some of the things that I found.

These were taken in the motel room after a rushed cleaning.

Day one. We met Rob Ernst at the gate at 7:30 and after a little chit-chat We drove to the east pit. We got there and started to dig where I had been digging on My last trip. We had to move to the other side of a small pre-dug hole that was under My tailing pile from the last time. We started to find a lot of really big bones, mostly fragments and vertebrate as soon as we started to dig. When the first screens were done We had several teeth, shark and mammal! There was also an ear bone in matrix in My screen (I think that it is both pieces together). Around 2:00 just after a quick lunch break I found the Allodesmus mandible ( it was dumb luck finding it, but My experience as a rock hound kept Me from smashing it to extract the tooth.)!!! We continued to find a lot of good things for the rest of the after noon, and the 85+ degree temperature was bearable with the large umbrella that Thaelia set up.

We left at 5:00 headed to the motel.

Day two. We meet with Rob at the gate at 6:00 and went back to the east pit to continue digging in the hole that we dug in Thursday. As soon as We started to dig good teeth started coming out!! We continued to find good teeth and some neat bones all day. The temperature climbed into the low 90's, and the shade from the umbrella was a life saver. This allowed us to keep digging until after 5:00. Then We went back to the motel, with big smiles on our faces.

Wow!! I had to look up Allodesmus, and this is really a fantastic find. I enjoy the descriptions and results of your hunting, living vicariously and imagining the feeling as you realized what you have.

Congratulations!!
