Southern Alberta Fossil Hunt

There have been many times I wanted to find a perfect ammonite. I've hunted many favourable formations and found many partial ammonites and some very nice smaller ones. The trip last week to the Medicine Hat area provided me with the best find so far. The ammonite I found was resting on a hillside waiting for me. I am not certain of the identification and there is still a lot of work required to stabilize this baby!

Ooooo, that's really nice! :)

Really nice!! Can we get a view from above? Perhaps we can help with the ID. That one does look pretty fragile, and it'll take significant effort to keep much of the shell attached if you decide to try for that.

I took a couple more shots from above. This piece measures 12 inches X 11 inches. At the opening of the ammonite there is a baculite, a piece of which I was able to save. The remaining crushed baculite is still there, although not as distinct.

I cleaned up a few more...(1) is a Placenticeras intercalare, (2) is baculite mould with great suture lines, (3) is a piece of baculite in matrix with petrfied wood and teredolites.
