espeton
I found what appears to be a drum fish mouth plate. Maybe is not a fossil and is from a modern fish. I have found many of these teeth in Big Brook (NJ) but non of them in the Potomac river. It is Paleocene age. Anybody know if this kind of fossils can be found there? Thanks
shark57
It is Phyllodus toliapicus, a type of wrasse found in the Aquia (Paleocene) and Nanjemoy (Eocene) formations of this area.
abyssunder
I think you have a good ID,shark57. Here is a document of Robert E. Weems with a comparative specimen from the Paleocene of South Carolina. http://www.researchgate.net/publication/271815242_Actinopterygian_Fish_Remains_from_the_Paleocene_of_South_Carolina Edited August 2, 2015 by abyssunder 1 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. Carl
Outstanding find! But very different from anything you can find at Big Brook. Somewhat similar teeth - very different fish.
