Sharks of SC Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Found this cetacean vertebra yesterday (8/30/15).. It seems to exhibit some pathology or maybe a healed fracture or something. It is probably the strangest vert of its kind that I've ever found. All opinions welcomed. Thanks in advance!
RichW9090 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 The picture is too out of focus to really tell much at all. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
Boesse Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Well, it's a pathology - there's probably only a half dozen people on earth knowledgeable on cetacean pathology to diagnose this, and I'm not one of them; so don't be surprised that nobody on the forum is going to tell you what you'd like to hear. It's an interesting specimen, and it's a style of pathology I've not seen before - so that's pretty neat, but it's not one of the "easy" ones I could identify.
Shellseeker Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 So, to reinforce Bobby's comment- (by the way he is one of the foremost experts in the world on marine mammal paleontology) I hunt in Florida and I know a lot about fossils of the US Southeastern coast, and I have found hundreds of beat_up dolphin verts. If there is a pathology here, how about providing a very clear photo and a detailed description on what you believe the pathology to be?
