GordonC
Unearthing a bed which contains stromatopora and a small colony of stromatolites in the Helderberg Group Manlius Thatcher Member near Port Jervis NY. Two views of an approximately 12" specimen. (ID following Leo F. Laporte, Manlius of NY, 1967, pg 83.)
Ridgehiker
Those are interesting. Nice to see specimens that are so distinct and not metamorphosed. We once walked over a ridge and thought it was sandstone layers. Took us a while to realize it was a stromatolite reef. Other fossils are rare around stromatolites. The only ones we ever found were inarticulate brachiopods and trilobites in surrounding matrix. Never the usual brachiopods or corals.
Fossildude19
Those are pretty cool looking. I wonder what they would look like, slabbed and polished. Auspex
Good examples, clearly showing the diagnostic structure; well done!
