Thanks very much, John. We're getting close to 30,000 signatures already. 84 days to go for the last 90,000.

Thank you all! :)

The scientists are with us. They are in the same way restricted as collectors by the law and the bureaucracy.

So it is a question of attracting attention to ourselves to get better political decisions. Therefore we (palaeontologists and further scientists, collectors etc.) need to be heared in Berlin!

Dear members of thefossilforum,

the petition now reached the mark of 34.000 supporters. Nearly 10.000 are from other countries thant Germany - that are also you. Thank you so much for supporting us! :)

The law is now in the hands of the Federal Council of Germany which is definitively not completely content with what the German government in Berlin plans. We got a bit positive feedback from Bavaria that they want to get a better balance of this law, considering what collectors want and need. Hopefully we can persuade other mighty players. We are in contact with collectors of stamps, artworks, coins etc., who have the same problems with that law.

Every further vote is appreciated: https://www.openpetition.de/petition/online/fuer-den-erhalt-des-privaten-sammelns - also by your family members and friends.

Kind regards from Germany

Sönke

Neither nor. There are a lot of people on the bandwagon now, from scientist to dealers to hobbyists and the lobby is starting to pick up steam in the sense that a good number of politicians are now lending an ear to sensible arguments and the hope is getting stronger that amendments could be made before the law is passed. The wheels of European politics fortunately turn slowly. Nobody likes to rush into things here, which is why there are a lot of checks and balances on the way to passing a law.

Sorry I am so late to this topic, I just signed the petition today. I want to thank the Mods for deciding that TFF would officially get behind this effort. We, as fossil hunters have no voice in politics, but we should. Just like every other interest group, we need to speak up to be heard but as individuals our voices are lost in the wind. This forum has been very apolitical, but I think laws like this are so egregious that we need to come together and speak up and speak out to protect our "cultural heritage". A culture which goes back centuries and includes names like Anning, Walcot, Cope, Marsh, Brown, Darwin, etc. Our culture had its own heroes and villains, our own wars (bone wars, Eldredgeops/Phacops, Birds are/are not Dinos). We span the world and have our own pilgrimage sites like Calvert Cliffs, Solnhofen, Mazon, STH, Burgess shale, Olduvai Gorge, Chengjiang, Liaoning, and many others. We have our own language and customs, our own artifacts, our own art. I once told someone on TFF that humans build communities and politics is a result of that. Our community deserves protection too, thanks for speaking up.

Just my $.02

I scanned around to find what is happening with this, and found that the petition has been submitted to the German legislators and they rejected it last month. http://committeeforculturalpolicy.org/germany-rejects-petition-signed-by-44500/ The new amendments to the Protection of Cultural Heritage law have still not been passed by the legislators, though, and seems to be stuck in committee.

Thanks for the update here. Yes, that was a slap in the face to all signees, but at least the politicians are now aware of the dissatisfaction. As a consequence, 14 experts, including museum directors, art dealers, lawyers and collectors were invited in the middle of April to a meeting of the committee for cultural policy presided over by minister Monica Gruetters, who is determined to push this law through as quickly as possible. There were also written opinions submitted from organizations who were not invited, such as the many legal groups which represent the interests of fossil and mineral collectors. It appears that the members of the committee are seriously interested to hear all sides of the argument before the law is passed and there is still a chance that a number of passages that are detrimental to our hobby could be amended. That is the last information that I have, and that was a month ago already. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything new.

Those with least practical experience often wield too much authority over natural resources and those with most practical experience.

Even though the petition was officially "rejected", it did raise attention to their list of objections to the amendments by having 44 thousand signatures and forced the legislators to read the list. The petition might be why this is still stuck in committee. They are actually going to consider the implications of their laws before enacting them. They know people are watching and they care about it.

I've just brought myself up to date but there's not much more to tell, because the work of the national committe is being carried on behind closed doors since the hearings. There are however a good number of public podium discussions, hearings in state parliaments and press releases on the subject where our cause is well represented. The federal states have also been informed of the misgivings. We can only hope that some sensible amendments are being made behind those closed doors. We'll only be able to learn more about that when the proposed law gets its next reading in the federal parliament, but that should be taking place relatively soon, since the minister apparently wants to push it through before the summer break.
