Lizard tail or root?

According to this geologic map of NM, the area around Las Cruces is Neogene aged sedimentary rocks.

Could be a piece of plant - looks carbonized.

Ty Tim,for the fast reply.......so the "rocks" around LC area are not that old compared to other parts of the US?.......How would it get the carbonized look?

Basically, it is part of the fossilization process that can affect plants and some animals/insects. :)
