Dill
Hi there. Thanks for having me. I'm a newbie fossil person but an experienced beachcomber. Been finding a lot of white flint on the beach. Today I found this and at first thought it was a calcified shell but it has one of those deep closed-bottom holes like other flint I find. On the back it has a deep concave area like flint. I looked at it when I got home and saw tiny designs on one area. Is this any kind of a fossil or is it something else? Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Fossildude19
Looks like a modern, heavily worn bit of Astrangia sp., or White Encrusting Coral on some type of extremely worn bivalve shell. Dill
Yep. It sure does Tim. Thanks a lot. Would the deep hole be from a welk snail or other drilling creature?
Fossildude19
Yep. It sure does Tim. Thanks a lot. Would the deep hole be from a welk snail or other drilling creature? Most likely some sort of gastropod. Guguita2104
The coral seems recent (I've some doubts about the shell). About the hole, I agree with gastropod drilling marks. Regards and nice find, Guguita
Dill
Thanks so much. Apparently this coral is from the Cape Cod Mass. area which isn't far away. I looked thru my finds & have a good chunk of it with some beautiful lacy markings. Not a fossil but glad I know the name now
