Geodized fossils from the Lower Mississippian of Kentucky

I visited a number of outcrops in three parts of Kentucky to look for lowere Mississippian age fossils of the Nancy Member of the Borden Formation. I unfortunately didn't find anything exceptional but I was able to find numerous diversity of fossils. I found the majority in Casey Co. KY. which included a bunch of unusual geodized fossils. I found a few things in Rockcastle and Madison Co. KY.

Those are very very nice. I really like fossils that "geodize". There are a couple of sites I here in eastern N.C. that are Cretaceous some of the Cucullaea I find have crystals inside them.

I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

Hey Howard, I think the geodized brachs are intriguing--really nice. I dont think I've found any of the conularids when I was up further north--been quite awhile ago. I was also reading some tonight about them to refresh my memory about how odd they are and I wasnt aware that they sometimes produced pearl like elements...man there's alot of strange critters out there....

Thanks for showing us the latest...

Regards, Chris

You find some remarkable inverts in KY! I sure wish I lived closer to the Mississippian sites in that state. Madison County is about 2 and a half hours from me being near Knoxville so I have only been once, and I have not found any Mississippian anywhere closer in KY. But the time I did go, I found my two best Mississippian shark teeth in my collection at the moment.

Keep sharing these items with us, I am really enjoying your posts!

Nice finds. Quite the variety!

The first range of the Rockies to to west of us are also mostly Lower Carboniferous (early Mississippian) . However I have never found an uncoiled nautiloid in them. Also, conulariids much scarcer than in your deposits. Definitely a different faunal mix is preserved.

The Geodized specimens are a newt preservation.

Thanks for including the scale as easier to get perspective.

Those are really nice. I'm finding lots of geodized gastropods recently (just getting into it) in an area just to your west in Cumberland County Kentucky. Will try to post pics if you are interested. They look different than any I've seen pics of, but maybe someone on here has seen similar ones.
