My daughter found this

I'm a dad trying to find out what my daughter found in the river behind my house. I took this to show it to a naturalist at our local nature center. they could not help me much but they were very excited and said they had not seen anything like it. they suggested that I take it to the natural history museum in our area. I have not had the time and thought I would try here first.

WHERE: northern ohio, southern cuyahoga county. about 20 miles south of lake Erie. it was found in a small creek area that averages less than a foot of water unless it is raining. my daughter said it was under a larger rock and was completely covered in mud.

My Thoughts: my initial thought is that it is a claw from a very large animal. it has a chipped tip but it looks like it was a flat rounded tip. My guess is that it would be used fot digging. it is heavy like a rock would be.

I have no idea what time frame thus might be from. someone even suggested that it could be man made. All i know is that i dont know enough to determin that. the thick end is cut off at a nearly 90° angle.

Whatever it is this could be a really great learning experience to share with your daughter. Make that trip to the natural history museum together.

I agree with a section of a disc shaped concretion, with the surface in pics 2, 4 and 5 showing the typical pattern of a progressive failure (plumose fracture)
