We had a dog that was a mother for all babies animals that we had and the cat that looked to them as if they were part of the house. So i often saw amazing things like this one : my husband walking, the dog following him, the cat followed the dog and the babies birds and rabbits following the cat ! :D

I miss my chickens and my garden. We had grape vines on the back yard fence. The chickens would "high jump" to get the grapes. Somewhere, I have a video of me running around the back yard, flapping my elbows, bunch of grapes in my teeth and all four hens chasing me. :-)

We once had some brahmas.

The rooster was about 4 kilos and had golden, russet, black and white leathers. It made him look like a king with flamboyant colors on his panache. The hens were about 3 kilos and had also beautiful colors.

They were free in our garden, made racket when they laid eggs, eated what we gave from our meals, what they found wandering in the garden and seeds we gave them.

Sometimes they just stayed near our feet or followed us where ever we went, sometimes no.

They gave tasty eggs. We were so proud of them. They were very silent and discreet. A little too big : they scared our cat.

One morning i was surprised not to see them, so i called them. Usually they came, but this time they didn't.

I found the hens dead, hanging across the wire fence, head less. The rooster was just outside our garden it had obviously fought for its hens and hurt a fox, but it was flat dead. We miss them.

My husband and i decided not to live that a second time, since, we had no other hens.

I love the fox, i find them very beautiful. But not that time. :(

I love the fox, i find them very beautiful. But not that time. :(

Unfortunately, canids will kill for sport. My big sis and hubby run a large farm in NC and once lost an entire herd of goats to wild dogs or coyotes. They also killed two of the three cats we left with them when we moved away. But, that is just the dogs' instinct. For our hens, I went a little crazy. I put their house 1 m off the ground on steel posts and I closed the door every night. The entire chicken run had an electric fence. I even covered the top because I saw hawks hanging around.

I have a very lovely female dog, she's kind, she obeys well. But when a "silly" bird flies too near of her, she jumps and, hop, in the mouth ! She's worst than a cat !

Last year we took pity of a female of blackbird because it twice lost the father of her little ones. It succeeded to feed them (we helped a little) but was in a bad state : it had lost a lot of feathers and so seemed to be on the edge of dying (i don't know if it's the right expression), but it didn't. :)

This year it looks fine. But one day, on spring, i saw it laying flat dead, my dog looking at it. I thought "darn, she had killed it" and shouted to my dog "go to your place". My poor dog came back shamingly to her place.

As soon as the dog was far enough, it just jumped back on its legs and started to look for food !

My house is surrounded by garden. I'm a garden nut and can spend hours a day in it. Its stuffed with thousands of plants and I have no room to stuff in anymore. Each Autumn I also plant about 3,000 bulbs

All creatures are welcome. Birds, bugs, rabbits, etc. Today we had a falcon visit and I was worried it would catch the newly fledged Chickadees and Downey Woodpeckers. Fortunately it didnt seem to be in hunting mode.

What else is in the garden?...found some ghoulies last Hallowe'en.

I hope my prickly pears will come next year.

I am waiting for unripe apples, pears, peachs, white figs and black figs and also for the blackberries i find around the nearby lake.

Later in the year i have rosehips i use to make jam. (yum) :D

I also had saskatoonberries the canadensis and the ovalis. They are good but the ovalis are much better.

I am a very greedy one concerning fruits. During years i was alone to eat the mulberries and the saskatoonberries because my husband believed they weren't good (but i didn't tell him they were). ;)

Right now in the nearby woods there are millions of of ripe Saskatoon berries. The wild ones are the very best. Bear, coyote, wolf poop is dark purple because they spend all day eating the berries.

As for rose hips. We also make jam. Alberta is called 'Wild Rose Country'. We pick the wild rose hips in December after they freeze and become much sweeter. However, only half from a bush so that the birds and animals have lots to eat. Bears eat the hips when they come out of hibernation in the Spring.

Now you have me laughing. After your roadrunner thread I'm now imagining another Warner Brothers cartoon, Foghorn Leghorn trying to convince the young chicken hawk that he isn't a chicken but that the dog is.

Raise chickens! Some Grizzly would be lured in, eat the chickens as an appetizer and then be looking in the window for the main course.

My wife never let me hear the end of it. "You spent $1000 on those chickens and all that equipment and we got, what, $100 worth of eggs out of them??!!" She has a long memory, too. Any time I propose something involving money, it's "Yeah right, genius. Remember that thing with the chickens?"

I enjoy gardening, though my yard is small. There's less grass and more vegetables now that my kids are grown and don't need the room for running around. My little grandson likes walking through the tiny vegetable garden while eating the cherry tomatoes he picks. I had ducks and chickens and geese and goats long ago, in another place and time, but there's no room for them here and now. When we moved here many years ago I missed living (and teaching) beside a pond, so I dug out a tiny little pond in my yard. It's less than a dozen feet long and maybe 6 feet wide, but it's helped to keep me more or less sane. We're about 50 yards from a small swampy area and somehow the frogs manage to find our pretty little pond. They help make the yard feel bigger.
